Shiny Open Scholastic Tournament 2023

Tokyo Bilingual Chess Club's 35th Scholastic Tournament held on August 26, 2023 with the time control of 25 min. + 5 sec. increment.  The Tournament Director, CM Alex Averbukh  made the pairings each round and settled any type of dispute that arose during the game. As always, we could not hold chess tournaments without him! Thanks for yummy souvenir from NYC, CM Alex!

Handshakes are back at the beginning of round, but with a caution for COVID-19.  There were 19 young players, that came out during our tournament from at least 15 schools.  Children played five rounds showing fine sportsmanship as well as fine ability. We won't be so concerned about preparation because the results are not as meaningful this time and we can focus on making sure kids are getting an enjoyable and edifying chess experience.

We had two sections and the winners in Group A were:

Class A: Ryo Noda 5.0/5.0

Class A: Eito Nishida 4.0/5.0

Class A: Tristan Chih 3.0/5.0

Class A: Ian Rankin 3.0/5.0

Class A: Kairi Akiyama 3.0/5.0

Class A: Haruki Shimagaki 3.0/5.0

Winners in Group B were:

Class B: Le Nhat Duy 4.5/5.0

Class B: Saya Kikuchi with 4.0/5.0

Class B: Yuta Yano with 3.5/5.0

Congratulations to everyone who came out to participate and make for a great chess community event. With trophies, certificates and other prizes up for grabs, the tournament was fun and furtile breeding ground for up and coming champions!

Rock, Paper, Scissors is the all-time greatest, time-tested tie-breaking method ever devised by mankind. For the first time, RPS is utilized for the 3rd place of Class A due to time constraints.

We feel so truly lucky to have instructors, Matt & Simon from Switzerland, who showed all of the care, understanding, and patience that they do. Thank you for everything!!!

We wish all of these bright young players continued success and hope to meet them and their parents again in the future. We are curious to see what changes will occur in the next few months.

Stay tuned for the Halloween scholastic tournament on 10/28!
